Anama Villanueva is a Filipino American visual artist based in New York City. Her practice moves between drawing, painting, collage, and mixed media, shaped by observation, memory, and lived experience.Drawing has remained at the center of her practice. Since 2008, she has drawn people encountered on New York City subways, working directly from observation as the movement of the train becomes part of the mark. Other drawings emerge more intuitively, allowing figures and forms to develop without a predetermined image. Her paintings and mixed-media works extend this way of seeing into everyday spaces—rooms, objects, gestures, fragments of architecture, and moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed. Through layering, repetition, and shifting perspectives, the familiar becomes rearranged somewhere between observation and imagination.Born in the Philippines and based in New York, Villanueva studied Fine Arts at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. Her work has been exhibited in New York, Manila, and internationally.
